2024 Madison Air Show Cancellation Announcement
Posted: September 26, 2024
After monitoring the weather conditions closely and receiving a briefing from the National Weather Service this morning, we regret to announce the cancellation of this year's air show. According to the latest forecast, Hurricane Helene will move into our area tomorrow through Saturday, bringing torrential rains and strong winds. Combined with the existing low-pressure system, this weather event will create a Fujiwhara effect, further complicating conditions.
Anytime we have an air show, there comes a point where Mother Nature makes the decision for us. The Madison Air Show has lucked out many years, just missing rain by a day or two. We’ve even had mornings with low ceilings, only for the weather to clear up perfectly by showtime. Unfortunately, due to the current conditions and the timing of these future weather events, we have made the difficult decision to cancel this year's show.
We explored every possible way to make this event happen, but the timing and duration of the weather simply aren’t favorable. In addition to the weather minimums for our performers, the anticipated rain and wind will saturate key areas such as the Kid Zone, handicap parking, and transient aircraft parking, rendering them unusable. We’ve also taken into account that the severe weather will prevent many of our static display aircraft from arriving or being able to participate.
At the end of the day, we would rather save the money and focus on having a great event next year, rather than spend the money and get rained out. We certainly hope our fans understand that this decision was not taken lightly.
This is the first time in the last 10 years that we’ve had to cancel due to weather. However, we are committed to bringing the air show back next year and have already started working with the performers to rebook for 2025. All sponsorship money will be retained and applied to next year’s show, which will take place on September 27, 2025.
We were all looking forward to this year’s event, and we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Thank you for your understanding and continued support. We’ll see you next year!
Sincerely,
Madison Municipal Airport Air Show Team
